It’s normal to be nervous when you are about to discuss divorce with your children. This is a difficult conversation that you may have never expected to have. You may be worried about how they will respond to the news and the questions they may ask you.

Nonetheless, you can ease the talk with a few tips. Below are three of them :

1. Hold the conversation together with your spouse

If possible, you and the other parent should tell your children about the divorce together. This can help show them you are still working together as their parents. If you can’t hold the discussion together, inform each other about when you will have the talk. Breaking the divorce news to your kids without the other parent’s knowledge can lead to misunderstandings.

It can be challenging to be the second parent to have the conversation because your children may already be going through different emotions after the initial discussion. Besides, they may have a lot more questions by now. Thus, you should be well-prepared.

2. Decide what to say

Whether you tell your children about the divorce together or individually, you need to decide what to say . How should you start the conversation? What reason will you give for the divorce? How will you answer questions?

3. Acknowledge their feelings

When talking to your children about divorce, it’s crucial to encourage them to express their feelings and acknowledge those emotions. Tell them it’s okay to feel sad or worry about their future. Then, you can let them know they are loved by both parents and will do your best to maintain their routines.

As a parent, telling your kids you are getting a divorce and watching your kids go through different emotions can be the hardest thing. It’s vital to get more information before and after the conversation to protect your children.
