How to achieve an amicable divorce

Just because you and your spouse have decided to go your separate ways doesn’t mean that you have to be in constant conflict with one another. There are ways you can come to a solution for your Virginia divorce-related issues while keeping disagreements to a minimum.

What is an amicable divorce?

An amicable divorce or separation is one in which the two parties work for an outcome that is beneficial for everyone involved. The focus is on ex-spouses resolving issues instead of competing against each other and retaining a civil, productive relationship between them. An amicable divorce can make it easier to decide who will get custody of the children or keep the marital home. The goal of this type of divorce is to do what is ultimately best for the family and to keep emotional damage to a minimum.

Tips for an amicable divorce

Therapists recommend being discreet when talking about the divorce. It is natural to want to vent about what you’re going through, but it may be best to speak with trusted friends or family members when your children are not around. Children may feel like they have to choose sides to prove their loyalty if they hear you say something disparaging about your ex.

It may also be a good idea to be direct but kind in the divorce proceedings. It is only natural to ask for specified amounts of financial benefits or to make certain requests concerning child custody and visitation. Being reasonable while still considering your financial future could help you and your ex come up with a post-divorce financial plan that works for you and your children.
