Going on a road trip? Be aware of potential hazards

A road trip can be a great way to make lifelong memories with your friends and family. While having a fun road trip is exciting, it can be dangerous. Tens of thousands of people die in crashes every year, and by taking some extra precautions on your road trip, you can avoid some of the hazards that you may not have expected. Here are five hazards that everyone should look out for on a road trip:

Restless passengers

Entertaining kids in the back of your car not only benefits them but you as well. When the kids in a car are calm and focused on something like a movie or a tablet, they are less likely to cause major distractions for the driver. These distractions can cause a driver to get into a serious accident, which is why it is important to keep your passengers from distracting you.

Fatigue

Long drives can have a lot to see, but they can also take a toll on the driver. Being too tired can quickly mean falling asleep at the wheel. You can combat fatigue by rotating drivers and taking plenty of breaks along the way.

Bad weather

Fog, heavy rain and snowstorms can create dangerous road conditions. Low visibility and icy roads can make it extremely difficult to get to your destination safely. It is better to get to your destination late than it is never to get there at all, so be sure to drive safely during bad weather.

Poor vehicle maintenance

Failing to change your oil, keep new tires on your car, replace dead headlights or even have enough windshield fluid in your car can keep you from safely operating your vehicle. The smallest features in our car can have a major impact on our safety, so be sure you and your car are ready for anything.

Reckless driving

While your destination may be a long way away, that is not a good reason to disobey traffic laws to get there. Excessive speeding, not using turn signals, and weaving through traffic are all things that other drivers may not be ready for and can cause you to collide with other drivers. Maintain safe driving habits to keep you and your passengers safe.

Stay safe this year

By taking the extra time to ensure you and your passengers are safe on your road trip, you can make lifelong memories with your loved ones and ensure you will do the same next year. A few extra precautions can make all the difference, so be sure you are looking out for yourself and others on your next road trip.
