Learning to drive is extremely exciting and provides newfound independence for those who obtain their driver’s licenses. If you are a new driver living in the North Chesterfield or Richmond, Virginia, area, there are a few tips you should follow when heading out onto the open road with other drivers for the first time.

Familiarize yourself with your vehicle

After receiving your driver’s license from your local DMV office, you must familiarize yourself with the vehicle you intend to drive.

Slow acceleration

Slowly accelerating is key when driving, especially as a first-time driver . Even though you learn what speed to maintain and how to read and interpret road signs from completing your local DMV test, you will still require hands-on driving to understand the acceleration in your vehicle.

Avoid braking too fast

One of the biggest mistakes a new driver is likely to make once he or she is out on the road is braking too fast. Braking too quickly can cause your vehicle to suddenly slow down without providing drivers behind you with adequate warning time. Braking too fast, especially during heavy traffic, is one of the top leading contributors to motor vehicle accidents .

Watch for road signs and construction

Construction and upcoming road signs are not always predictable, which is why it is essential to always remain alert and aware of your surroundings. Watch for road markings and signs to determine whether there will be changes to the road up ahead and to figure out how you should best prepare.

Following distance

Whenever you are driving behind another driver, do so while maintaining a reasonable distance between the two vehicles. There should be always at least one to two other vehicle spaces between you and the car or truck in front of you. Maintaining proper distance reduces the risk of collision and/or injury.

If you are living in the Richmond, VA, area, and you have recently been involved in an auto accident as a new driver, consider obtaining legal counsel. Working with an attorney who is not only well-versed in personal and auto injuries, but also in working with bilingual clients can give you the peace of mind you deserve.
